Key performance areas

The main responsibilities and duties of a Diesel Mechanic include:

  • Determine the requirements of jobs to be completed daily according to the job card and vehicle
    inspection sheet.
  • Demonstrate initiative and flexibility when situations are altered Ensure tools are always in good working
    condition and available if required to go on a breakdown.
  • Service and maintain various petrol and diesel vehicles to the standards required and according to the
    job card; and Manufactures specification.
  • Breaks adjustments / replacement
  • Clutch adjustments
  • Oil service including hydraulic
  • Replace oil filter
  • Adjustment to engine specs
  • Grease vehicles
  • Report all relevant repairs to be conducted on vehicle via inspection sheet.
  • Remove, refit engines, gearboxes & rear axles and rebuild if viable
  • Replace clutch assemblies
  • Conduct vehicle inspections on receipt of job cards to ascertain if there are further requirements not
    stated on the job card
  • Repair air and hydraulic brake systems
  • Strip & assemble brake systems;
  • Repairs to hydraulic hook lift systems.
  • Adjust and bleed breaks & clutch system
  • Conduct minor electrical inspection & repairs
  • Fuses, Globes, Gauges
  • Diagnose problems and carry out the required repairs at the breakdown scene for repairable faults or
    obtain the required guidance from your manager or determine vehicle should be towed back to the
    workshop.
  • Ensure you are available by cell phone if required for stand-by duties unless otherwise arranged with the
    workshop manager
  • Ensure sufficient and correct tools are maintained and available for jobs to be completed
  • Adhere to the driver’s code of conduct when using a company vehicle or when carrying out tasks.
  • Ensure job cards are completed correctly.
  • Complete log sheets on trips completed for the company as well as a vehicle checklist.
  • Ensure an order issued is submitted with all relevant information.
  • Adhere to the company’s policies and procedures in terms of Leave Health and Safety Best operating
    procedures
  • Attendance register
  • Report instances where drivers are witnessed abusing company vehicles
  • Ensure an attendance register is signed whenever any overtime is required.
  • Completing a job at an entity Improve personal performance through regular performance reviews.
  • Identify and Health and safety problems and report them to the safety rep
  • Ensure all machinery and equipment is used according to the safety procedures set out by legislation.
  • Ensure PPE is worn at all times when required.
  • Ensure that you and other staff use floor mats, seat and fender covers in client’s cars at all times.
  • Comply with occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and legal requirements, including safe
    driving practices.

Qualifications required 

  • Matric/ Grade 12
  • Qualified Diesel Mechanic
  • Code EC License
  • 5 years’ relevant experience as a diesel mechanic
  • Japanese Vehicle Experience
  • Must be able to deal with pressure.
  • Computer Literate Computer literate – MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and a good command of English.
  • Well versed in e-mail etiquette.
  • Good admin skills, hard worker and punctual.
  • Natural ability to organize and be neat.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, and under pressure.
  • A high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good time management skills to adhere to strict deadlines.
